"May Day" in Zurich. Its International Workers' Day. In a lot of cities around the world this equates to public demonstrations to bring awareness to labor issues. I met a group of friends in Zurich and walked around checking out the events. Seemed a lot like "fight the cops day" for protesters and "fight the people day" for cops. Two aggressive groups on the offensive.

Lots of rubber bullets, rocks, bottles, tear gas, water cannons, etc. Pretty intense at times. people were being dragged off left and right. It went on all day.

Another aspect of the day was the gathering of food and information vendors with live music, speakers, and movies all going on in an open plaza. I think this is the intended focus of the International Workers' Day in Zurich, although every year the city erupts in a day's worth of civilian warfare.

at one point a cop grabbed me and brought me to his supervisor. it was all in swiss-german but i gathered they were pissed because i was trying to photograph one of their many undercover agents dressed like a protestor. i had seen the guy earlier in the crowd of rock throwers and then saw him later talking with an officer in a different part of the city. when he leaned forward i could see his gun strapped under his coat and went for a picture but apparently i wasn't the only one being observant and was lead by my sweatshirt to be dealt with. they were quick to let me go when i went for "uninformed american tourist," which isn't hard to play. they told me "Get out of here, this is a riot!"

parts of the city sidewalks were made of small cobble stone that quickly became ammunition for the protesters.

after this picture he was dragged off and never seen again. R.I.P. spencer

the guns are rubber bullet shotguns. popping off all day. they didn't hurt from far away but definitely startling. my friends and i were just observing but found ourselves caught between the protestors and cops more than once.
