Southern California Again

This happened a few months ago, i just forgot to put it up...

Friday- drove to LA. with my brother. went to the museum of contemporary art to see an expo on graffiti. http://www.moca.org/ http://www.moca.org/museum/exhibitiondetail.php?id=443

our buddy got us in on a fake guestlist. it was pretty funny. right after we went see a band called "fucked up." it was fun and there were friends from sacramento in both places. after we tried driving to san diego but could only make it a little way before having to stop for a few hours of sleep.

visited family in san diego county. lots of hikes and hot spring soaks.

spent a few ferris bueller days with a friend in oceanside.

relaxing, vegan food, beavis and butthead re-runs, surfing, beach, skating, hot tubbing, etc.

drove home.

when the weather is warm again...

“When I hoped a train north, I went through a number of intersections. There were always cars there, sometimes a lot of them, stopped in a line waiting for the train and me to pass. They sat held back, having to pause in their day to let this train go by; waiting for that lever of an arm to quit its flashing red lights and lift itself out of the way so they could finally drive on. And it seemed funny to me, that all these years I had been the one in the car having to stop and wait for these trains passing through whenever they please; and here it is now- that I’m sitting on one of these trains, and all the cars are stopping for me. Stowing away on the back of a beast is not exactly how I imagined it, but the modern man must hustle.”

7 Hours in the Bay

it wasn't so much of a travel as it was an outing but there are a few points that made me want to share.

the main idea was to go to sf for the 6th annual pillow fight on valentines day. drove a car full of people down after i got out of school.

a youtube video from the previous year was part of the encouragement:
skip to the one minute mark for the actual beginning

also from the previous year: areal view

it was raining a little this year so the turnout was nearly as good, but still hundreds and hundreds.

it was amazing. outside of the fact that it was incredibly fun running around for hours pillow fighting with hundreds the people, the vibe blew me away. with all those people, and with the aggressive nature of the game, i couldn't believe how easy going it was. i know we are talking about a pillow fight, but i still would have expected way more actual fights or confrontations, but almost everyone there had an amazing attitude.

it was at embarcadero square

most people there were probably between 16 and 28. i'd guess half guys half girls.

what really got me about all this was how grassroots it is.

it started with people spreading texts and social media messages, now its a known party.

-no organizers

-free

-everyone is welcome

-no sponsors, corporations, or profits

-loose rules as follows:
1) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
2) Tell everyone you know about PILLOW FIGHT!!!
3) Wait for the Ferry Building clock to strike 6:00pm
4) Don't hit anyone without a pillow (unless they want it)
5) Don't hit anyone with a camera
6) HAVE FUN!!!

everything was self-regulated. if someone got hurt, people would stop and help them. if someone was getting ganged up on too hard, people would stop it, etc...

-crowd is pretty much limited to fun people. its kinda like hitchhiking or couchsurfing. if you are interested and participating in something like this, you're probably pretty cool. assholes and naysayers wouldn't bother to show up.

after a few hours when things were winding down we met another friend and got some good eats in berkely, then went hot tubbing in the rain for a few hours.

made it to bed by 4 and slept through my first class.

good times.

i had my video camera the whole time. just need to figure an editing system so i can put the footage together and post it. same with the train hopping trip. same with some stuff from switzerland. some day....

might do a little socal CA road trip with some camping up the coast over spring break. after that the next chance i'll have is for two weeks in may. i've got a cool idea for what i want to do, but i've found its better to never share your plans until you have the ticket in hand. either that or you share when you get back. then they can't tell you why you shouldn't go. of course, they probably have never been themselves, but that doesn't seem to be of any significance.
